not liking "Mamma Mia!" is almost a character flaw. I think it's a really nice film, and okay Peirce Brosnan cannot sing and the mother/daughter scene is soppy, but I think it's very tongue in cheek. Pierce definately did not take himself seriously when singing SOS, and I think maybe people that hate it don't get the irony?
I think also maybe people are prepared to hate it because they hate musicals. yes, musicals are sometimes lame, but if you don't take yourself too seriously you can really get into the whole affair. If you look at Academy Award nominations/wins, musicals like Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music and The King and I have been so successful, which are cold hard facts that don't take into account personal taste.
I thought that Amanda Seyfried was so good as the daughter and Meryl Streep is never bad. I'm glad it's done as well as it has in the box office because it needs recognition for being the awesome film it is. Mark Kermode reviewed it so accurately.
I also saw The Dark Knight. yawn.
A million years too long. and why do they make batman talk in that stupid stupid voice? Heath Ledger was actually brilliant and totally not saying that cos he's dead and all. So weird and creepy. I think special effects wise etc it's aces but just hugely over publicised and over rated.
I mean, if Heath Ledger hadn't died it would still be a popular film definately, but not all this oscar buzz. not deserving of that. I'm really glad Jonathan Ross didn't like it. He is the pioneer of thruth.
